University Profile
The University of Strathclyde was founded some two hundred years ago in 1796 when John Anderson, Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University, left in his will instructions for 'a place of useful learning', a university open to everyone, regardless of gender or class. However, the university received its Royal Charter in 1964.
At that time, when the University of Strathclyde received its Royal Charter, it had around 4,000 full-time students and one block of buildings fronted by the Royal College. Today, Strathclyde is the third-largest university in Scotland. It has 67 buildings over 500 acres of land. At present, there are almost 20,000 students enrolled in various courses in various subject areas with the University.
The University of Strathclyde offers a wide range of course programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level through its five main faculties. These faculties include the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Strathclyde Business School. Apart from the regular courses, the university also offers distance learning, short course and continuing professional development and evening courses. Overall, the university provides various courses for over 50,000 people every year.
