The University of Southampton has a distinguished heritage that can be traced back to the creation of the Hartley Institution in 1862. The University was founded on 15 October 1862 by Henry Robinson Hartley, the son of a Southampton wine merchant, who left his estate to the Corporation of Southampton.
At present, there are almost twenty thousand students registered in various course programmes in various subject areas. Its several campuses in Southampton and Winchester also include 5,000 faculty members. The main campuses of the University include Highfield Campus, Avenue Campus, Boldrewood campus, Southampton National Oceanography Centre, Southampton General Hospital, and Winchester School of Art.
The University of Southampton has more than 20 Academic Schools, which are organised into three Faculties. The faculties are Faculty of Engineering, Science and Mathematics; the Faculty of Law, Arts, and Social Sciences; and the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences. The university has over 40 research Centres and Institutes as well, grouped into these three faculties.
The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) monitors the standard of teaching in Higher Education in the U.K. As per the QAA, in total 22 out of 34 departments were rated excellent. The Professional Services, offered by the university, are responsible for the effective delivery of all non-academic activities within the University in collaboration with Schools and Faculties.
