University Profile
The University of Essex is based at Wivenhoe Park, Colchester. The University received its Royal Charter in 1965. The University has 19 departments spanning the Humanities, Social Sciences and Science and Engineering. At present, there are around 8,800 students at the University, 25% of these within the Graduate School. The University is also the home for students from more than 125 countries from all over the world.
The University's Colchester Campus has over 200 acres of attractive parkland. There is easy access to coast and countryside from the campus. Again, the close-knit Colchester campus has shops, banks, and restaurants, and the University is able to offer accommodation to a high proportion of its students. The Colchester campus is a lively community with some 7,243 full-time students, 5,648 of whom are undergraduates. Interestingly, the University has roughly equal numbers of men and women students.
The University offers a wide range of courses in both undergraduate and postgraduate level. There are both full-time and part-time courses available for the students. Other courses include summer course, professional, and other short-term courses. In recent assessments, the University of Essex has regularly ranked among the top twelve U.K. universities for the quality of its research, with many of its departments rated as 'outstanding' by international standards.
