Imperial College London as it is popularly known stands for Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine. It is a member and holds independent status of university of London. The institute was established in the year 1907 in South Kensington, known for its cultural and scientific activities.
The institute was formed with Royal College of Science, Royal School of Mines And The City And Guilds College. The two medical institutes, St Mary's Hospital Medical School and the National Heart and Lung Institute were merged in the years 1988 and 1995, respectively, with Imperial College London. Subsequently Royal Postgraduate Medical School and Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School merged with the institute in the year 1997 to form Imperial College Faculty of Medicine. The Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology and Wye College also merged with the institute in the year 2000.
The courses are offered in the fields, humanities, science communication and medicine. In humanities, credit courses are also offered at undergraduate level, language and evening classes are also offered for staff and students. The courses are offered also in the foreign language streams. The support for English language is also offered for non native English speaking staff and students.
The science communication division of Imperial College London offers teaching and research postgraduate programs in fields such as, science communication, media production and creative writing. The institute also offers MSc courses in Medical Translation and research programmes, such as, M.Phil and Ph.D in literature and various languages.
